Vitamin D is one of the most requested, and more increasingly tested vitamins in our practice.  Often known as the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D is not a vitamin but a prohormone.  Its main roles are in supporting bone health & integrity by promoting calcium and phosphate absorption in the GI tract.  More recently, research has shown that it also has impacts in our cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, metabolic, neurologic, mood and immune functions.

Vitamin D deficiency is widespread in our geographic region and has led to the debunking of the myth that adequate sun exposure provides sufficient levels in our bloodstream.  In fact, in Pennsylvania, this is only possible from June through August due to our latitudinal location on Earth’s surface.  In addition to geography, certain medication classes can contribute to deficiency including some seizure medications, steroids and weight loss medications.

I am often asked what the right dosage of Vitamin D is, which always leads into some confusion by the consumer as they are looking for a fixed dosage for the answer. When responding to this question it often leads to a discussion as the often-normal blood level above 30 is given, Optimal levels are found in the range of 50-80.  There are many factors that influence what dosage is appropriate and we can end with the statement the right dosage of Vitamin D is the one that produces a blood level of 50-80, further highlighting the importance of consulting with a healthcare professional that is knowledgeable about nutritional supplements.
